Meningococcal Vaccine Recommendation

PW_E196692

The outbreak of meningococcal disease continues to increase in the population of men who have sex with men (MSM). There have been over 20 cases since 2010 among men who live or spent time in NYC with at least 7 deaths. In response, the NYC and NYS Departments of Health have recommended that meningococcal vaccine be given to all HIV-infected MSM, and to all MSM who regularly have close or intimate contact with men met through online means or at a party or bar.
Please note that all Empire members who have vaccine coverage will be covered for meningococcal vaccine in the same way other recommended vaccines are covered.
We will not ask for any documentation, either written or oral, to explain why a member was given meningococcal vaccine. We will not ask for or look for a particular diagnosis code to explain why a member needs the vaccine. Please offer the vaccine to all appropriate members.
If you have any questions about this announcement, please feel free to Scott Breidbart, M.D., Chief Medical Officer.
