At Anthem Life, we believe in doing one thing and doing it well. 
As a subsidiary of the largest health benefits company in the United States, Anthem Life & Disability Insurance Company (Anthem Life) has grown with the family. But we haven’t outgrown our strong foundation, and we haven’t lost our focus. Our core business is and has always been group life and disability benefits.   
Anthem Life in New York 
Anthem Life is a New York company dedicated to meeting the needs of our New York customers. We are closely aligned with our New York affiliate, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. Together, we offer comprehensive solutions to our customers’ employee benefit needs. 
Where we started 
Anthem Life is a subsidiary of WellPoint, Inc. (WellPoint).  Our affiliated life and disability companies operate across the country. Our affiliates in Indiana (Anthem Life Insurance Company), California (Anthem Blue Cross Life and Health Insurance Company), and Georgia (Greater Georgia Life Insurance Company) do business in the 13 states other than New York where our health affiliates operate as Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association licensed plans. Health products in New York are sold by our affiliate, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. Outside our Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield service areas, life and disability products are sold by a non-Blue affiliate, UniCare Life & Health Insurance Company.  
How we grew 
WellPoint's life and disability operations are the product of a series of mergers and acquisitions over many years. Those changes continually expanded our scope while strengthening and consolidating our operations.   
In December 2005, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield became a part of the WellPoint family of companies. To support Empire’s customers, WellPoint established a New York life and disability company dedicated to serving our New York markets. That company, Anthem Life & Disability Insurance Company, brings with it the organizational strength of our parent company, more than 50 years of experience with nationwide operations, and the local expertise of our New York affiliate, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. 
Anthem Life today 
WellPoint's life and disability companies are licensed to do business in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Within our Blue Cross and Blue Shield service areas, our life and disability products are usually offered with health coverage. Outside those service areas, we offer life and disability coverage either unbundled from health coverage; packaged with our affiliates’ dental, vision, prescription or EAP coverage; or packaged with health coverage from other business partners.
