Coverage Effective Dates for Newborn Children

PW_B130978
Unless stated otherwise in the group certificate, dependent life insurance coverage for a newborn child will begin when the child reaches 15 days of age, provided:
the employee’s dependent life insurance coverage is already in effect on the child’s date of birth; or
the application for dependent life insurance is made within 31 days after the child’s date of birth.

If the application is not submitted within 31 days after the date of birth, the newborn child’s effective date is the first billing due date following our receipt of the employee’s application for the child, provided the child’s evidence of insurability is approved.
Exceptions
If a newborn is an inpatient on the day before the date coverage would otherwise become effective, the newborn’s effective date will be delayed until a period of 3 consecutive days has passed during which the newborn has not been an inpatient.
Special rules apply if dependent coverage is non-contributory (the employee does not contribute toward the premium) and
dependent coverage is not already in effect for the employee on the child’s date of birth; and
the employee’s application for dependent coverage is not submitted within 31 days after the child’s date of birth.

In that case, the dependent coverage will become effective on the first billing due date following the date the employee became eligible for dependent coverage. A retroactive premium charge will be assessed. Evidence of insurability will not be required.
